My new favorite style is the "black IPA" which falls under the category of american black ale. I love dark beer and I love IPAs, so you can kinda say it's the best of both worlds for me. I am going around trying new black IPAs to see which ones I like the best. So far I really like the Ottercreek Alpine Black IPA. Let's see how this one compares.
Pours black in color, a thick creamy head on top that stays. The beer has some definite chocolate and coffee notes. The hop flavor is very strong and earthy. The finish is quite bitter. Pretty smooth and easy upfront with the richness of a porter. All around nothing too much to complain about a solid beer. I think I would like the beer a little better if it had a better finish, there is an off flavor once the beer has been drank a while. 3.5/5. Not the best so far, but enjoyable
I have asked a few craft beer drinkers on a forum for some recommendations of this style and I have made quite a long list. Looks like I got my work cut out for me :)
